Campus Posting Guidelines

Signs, Posters, Notices & Support Materials

General Guidelines

  • Utah Tech provides designated indoor spaces for students, employees, and recognized university organizations to post signs, notices, posters, and other informational materials.
  • Posted materials may advertise events, meetings, activities, or express viewpoints on social, political, or other topics.

Location Guidelines

  • Post materials only on approved University bulletin boards.
  • Approved boards are marked with “Approval Required” signs. A list of these official boards is available through the Student Affairs Office (Gardner Center 202).
  • Materials may not be attached to:
    • Trees
    • Buildings
    • Walls
    • Sidewalks
    • Fountains
    • Other University structures or surfaces (including elevators, windows, doors, stairwells, garbage cans, fences, light poles, etc.)
  • Academic colleges and administrative departments may maintain their own bulletin boards and guidelines..
  • Tables, banners, and similar display materials must follow University Facilities Management guidelines.

Posting Approvals, Durat ion & Guidelines

  • An official approval sticker with a visible expiration date is required for all bulletin board postings.
  • Stickers must be obtained before posting from the Student Affairs Office (Gardner Center 202).
  • The approval sticker will be placed in the bottom, right corner of the posted material.
  • Materials without an expiration date may be removed by university personnel.
  • Materials may remain posted for up to 15 calendar days, unless an extension is approved.
  • Posters & fliers may not exceed 12” x 18”.
  • Only one copy of a poster or flier may be displayed per bulletin board.
  • Push pin boards: Push pins only
  • Magnetic boards: Magnets only
    • No tape or adhesives may be used on any of the boards.
    • The individual is responsible to provide the proper hanging material (push pins and/or magnets).

Commercial & Non-University Advertising

  • Commercial organizations and individuals who are not members of the University community must follow separate University procedures. Commercial advertising may be subject to:
    • Designated posting locations
    • Fees
    • Additional approval requirements

Responsibility for Posted Materials

  • The individual or organization posting materials is responsible for:
  • The accuracy and content of the information.
  • Any damages or liabilities resulting from the posting or use of display materials.
  • Posting materials does not imply University endorsement.

Distribution of Handbills, Petitions & Written Materials

General Guidelines

  • Individuals may distribute non-commercial handbills, petitions, and other written materials on campus without prior approval.

Distribution Requirements

  • Materials may be distributed outside university buildings as long as they:
    • Do not block building entrances or exits.
    • Do not interfere with pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
  • Materials may also be distributed inside university buildings provided they:
    • Do not disrupt University operations.
    • Do not unreasonably interfere with students, employees, or visitors.
  • Handbills and other written materials may not be attached or affixed to private property without the owner’s permission.

Commercial Distribution

  • Distribution of commercial handbills is subject to separate University procedures.
  • Commercial distribution may require:
    • Approval
    • Designated distribution locations
    • Applicable fees
  • Commercial distribution guidelines are administered through the University’s designated approval process.

Responsibility of Written Materials

  • Individuals or organizations distributing materials are responsible for:
    • The content of the materials.
    • Any damages or liabilities resulting from their distribution.
  • Distribution of materials does not imply University endorsement.

Temporary Structures on Campus

General Guidelines

  • Members of the University community and recognized University organizations may erect temporary structures on campus to express ideas, promote events, or support educational, social, or political activities.
  • A permit from the University Fire Marshal’s Office is required before any temporary structure may be erected.

Location/Staffing Requirements

  • Structures may be placed in designated free speech areas and must be staffed during daytime operating hours.
  • Structures may not:
    • Block building entrances or exits.
    • Obstruct pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
    • Damage landscaping or other University property.
    • Create a safety hazard or interfere with normal University operations.

Responsibility for Temporary Structures

  • The sponsoring individual or organization is responsible for:
    • The content displayed.
    • The safe operation and maintenance of the structure.
    • Removing the structure when the permit expires.
    • Any damages or liabilities resulting from the structure or its use.

Commercial or Non-University Structures

  • Temporary structures sponsored by commercial organizations or non-University groups are subject to separate University procedures.
  • Additional requirements may include:
    • Permit approval
    • Designated locations
    • Applicable fees
    • Other conditions established by the University Fire Marshal’s Office.

Demonstrations & Picketing

General Guidelines

  • Demonstrations and picketing are recognized forms of free expression on campus.
  • Individuals may participate in rallies, protests, marches, parades, processions, or other demonstrations without prior approval, provided they:
    • Remain peaceful and orderly.
    • Do not disrupt University operations.
    • Do not interfere with the rights of others.
    • Do not damage University or private property.

Time, Place & Manner Requirements

  • Demonstrations and picketing must:
    • Be conducted in a safe and orderly manner.
    • Not block or restrict access to university buildings.
    • Not obstruct pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
    • Not interfere with scheduled meetings, events, or other assemblies.
    • Not disrupt classes, teaching, research, office operations, or residential living areas.
    • Comply with all applicable University policies and lawful directions from University officials.

Responsibility of Demonstrations & Picketing

  • Participants are responsible for conducting demonstrations in accordance with University policies.
  • Individuals who violate these guidelines after being notified may be subject to removal, disciplinary action, arrest, or other actions permitted by law.
  • Demonstrators are financially responsible for any damages they cause during the event.
  • Damages caused by individuals who are not participants are the responsibility of those individuals.

Solicitation Sales

General Guidelines

  • The sale or solicitation of merchandise or goods, and/or food items, is not allowed in or on any University Premises or area covered by these regulations without express permission of the Director of Event Services. This restriction shall apply also to the sale (scalping) of tickets to any and all events held on University Premises.
