Mascot History
The mascot of our institution has been on a long journey to get where we are today.
The Trailblazer identity of Utah Tech University was adopted in 2016. ‘The Trailblazer’ spirit is brought to life by our lovable mascot “Brooks the Bison”, as the original Trailblazers of North America were bison. As bison blazed across the country, their trails were adopted by Native Americans as hunting and warrior paths and assisted the pioneers with their migration out west to places such as where our school lies today.
The name “Brooks” comes from the incredible story about the original trailblazer of our institution, Samuel Brooks. Brooks was an eager student who spent the night on the front steps of what was known then as, St. George Stake Academy. On the eve of its opening in 1911, Brooks hoped to be the first person to pay the institution’s $10 tuition and secure student status.
Our identity and mascot pay tribute to the trailblazers that first established this community and in turn our institution.
